How to increase bike acceleration with simple & legal modifications

If you want to improve your bike acceleration without breaking any laws, there are so many options available that can change the throttle response and performance. Let's know about them in detail!

1.Upgrade air filterThe easiest way to increase the horsepower or performance of a motorcycle is to use aftermarket air filters like K&N, BMC, etc., and many other types of air filters are also available.

Air filter
Does installing an air filter actually increase the horsepower or performance of a motorcycle
or is it just a marketing gimmick?

There are three types of filters for motorcycles. The first is a paper air filter, as if the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) company fits us with the paper air filters that come from OEM. After that comes the fabric filter, which is a cotton filter like a K&N; BMC has cotton filters. These are washable, reusable filters. After that, we get to see foam filters, which used to be used in very old cars, and the ones that are used now are used in motocross vehicles where there is very dusty. By going inside the engine, we get these three types of air filters. Air filters are called the lungs because they are the ones that help motorcycles to breathe. We breathe through our lungs; similarly, air filters are useful for motorcycles. The air filter is enclosed in a black-colored box, which you may not see for years, but the air filter has a very important role because the air filter filters out all the dust particles in the air and supplies good air inside, and the better the air the engine gets, the better the engine will perform.

I will tell you how high-performance air filters improve performance. The work of high-performance air filters is obviously that they can easily stop the dust, and the dust does not go inside, and the airflow can also be increased. When you install a K&N or BMC filter inside the engine, the airflow inside the engine increases, and the engine can take a breath easily.

What is the difference between the original and the first copy of K&N?

Answer: First of all, you cannot differentiate by looking at the photo which one is the first copy! When you hold it in your hand, you will know that it will be a K&N original filter, and its weight will be more than half a kg. The second thing you have to check is its logo; the logo should have perfect finishing and design, and the third thing is that Made in USA should be written on the air filter.

2.Install legal after market exhaust: first of all we understand the exhaust system. there are three types of things in the exhaust system of a motorcycle which are exhaust pipe header which comes out of the engine and after that there is a mid pipe in the middle which is placed somewhere near the underbelly below and after that, the third part is the muffler and we also call it slip-on exhaust. these are the three parts that make up the exhaust system.

After market exhaust

A slip-on exhaust is generally a plug-and-play system; whatever is installed, enjoy it; you don't need to think too much about alterations or other things. The exhaust weight of the company is very high, so we get a lighter weight exhaust valve, which we can fit easily, and in this we do not choose a catalytic converter or mid-pipe or header pipe at all; we just change the muffler, and in that the sound of the motorcycle increases a bit.

Another dangerous modification that takes place in the vehicle is the complete exhaust system, for which people have become crazy these days, especially superbikers, so in full system exhaust, as its name is full system, which means the entire exhaust system has to be changed, it is as simple as that, we are going to make changes in the entire exhaust system, it means starting from the header, through the exhaust manifold, from there to the header coming out till the end can, our entire exhaust system is going to be changed, so what changes happen in it, now in which I had told you that there is a thermoplastic converter fitted somewhere near the mid pipe and there is precious metal in it, so its work is this that the exhaust gases that are coming out are poisonous exhaust gases like carbon monoxide is present in it, it is highly poisonous gas, this gas is treated by the catalytic converter, all the rear metals like platinum palladium are present in it, precious metals are present and all these emissions which are harmful gases, the catalytic converter treats them and converts them into less harmful gases and takes them out, now this is the full system exhaust which we are dealing with, ordinary people would also know that the catalytic converter is taken out from the exhaust system of the motorcycle.

The cat in the slip-on exhaust stops the heat in the middle, as you know. When the exhaust gases are coming out of the engine, a lot of force is required to throw those exhaust gases out of the engine, and that force is required because the catalytic converter as a restrictor is working there. Therefore, if we remove the catalytic converter and complete the full system exhaust, then along with removing the cat, we later put in free-flow exhaust, which means that in a way it remains a free-flowing pipe in which the engine does not require much force to throw out the exhaust gases. Then by doing the full system, you can save from 5 to 12 percent. The horsepower increase is visible, but it has some disadvantages too. The biggest disadvantage is that other changes have to be made to the bike, and this is illegal as per the rates, and the sound of the full system exhaust goes beyond 80 decibels, due to which this car becomes illegal.

Legal:
  • Maintain noise limit. Be within government-approved decibel limits (80 dB). It is allowed up to (varies according to state).
  • Do not remove the catalytic converter; follow policy norms (BS6).
  • Stands for Bharat Stage 6 and refers to a set of emission norms implemented in India that significantly reduce the amount of harmful pollutants like nitrogen oxides and particulate matter emitted by vehicles.
illegal:
  • It's a very loud straight pipe or open exhaust, such as the SC Project or Akrapovic.
  • Catalytic converter Remover
  • Not registered in RTO
RTO approved: The vehicle has been tested and certified by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) and is approved by the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to be roadworthy.

fines & penalty:
  • If you are using illegal exhaust, then you can be fined up to Rs 1000 to 10000
  • There is a risk of the RC being cancelled or the bike being seized.
note:Under the environment (protection) rules of 1986, the maximum noise limit for motorcycles and scooters is 80 dB. Good if the aftermarket exhaust is less than 80 dB; the police will certainly not stop and fine you, but that's hypothetical. So do the modifications at your own risk.
If you want to change the exhaust for performance, then choose an ARAI-BS6 compliant exhaust, which is legal and also increases your performance.

3.change the sprocketLet's understand sprockets in a nutshell: if you increase the rear sprocket size, you are going to increase the torque; that means you will have better acceleration, but your top speed is going to decrease.

Change the sprocket

If you decrease the size of the front sprocket, your acceleration is going to increase and your top speed is going to decrease.

Alright, if you decrease the rear sprocket size, your acceleration will go down, but your top speed is going to increase, and similarly, if you increase the front sprocket size, your acceleration is going to decrease, but your top speed is going to increase.

In whichever car you can see a big sprocket at the rear sight, he will not be a normal person; he will be a dangerous stunt rider. That is because with the big sprocket, the initial power of the bike looks very dangerous, like we can do wheelies, drift, or burn out, etc., well, and we also feel the power of the bike.

4.use performance spark plug: First of all, let me tell you its function: that spark plug is an electrical device that is fitted inside the engine of your bike, and it helps in sparking the air and fuel mixture, due to which the engine runs.
Performance spark plug

Now, due to reducing its consistency, the air and fuel mixture burns in a consistent manner, due to which the engine runs very smoothly, and you get good performance. There are many types of spark plugs available in the market, but the one provided by the company is made of copper; it is easy to maintain and is cheap, and you have to keep changing it at a regular frequency. On the other hand, iridium spark plugs are the most famous spark plugs, which can also be called performance spark plugs. The material used in it is iridium material. It can run for at least 70 to 80 thousand km in your vehicle. Its benefit is that it provides you better mileage and better throttle response, due to which the performance turns out to be better. It is a little on the expensive side.

5.use lightweight engine oil: Lightweight oils come with very low viscosity, meaning they can flow properly into the engine and give better performance.

Whenever you buy engine oil, you must look for 2 numbers written on the bottle. Let's know what they mean. Now these numbers can be different. 0w30, 5w30, 10w30, 15w40, and 20w50, in which 'w' means winter. The smaller the number with 'w,' the thinner the mobile is. And the bigger the number with 'w,' the thicker the mobile is. So, 0W-40 Mobil is used at places where it is very cold because since it is thin, it easily flows in the engine. And 15W 40 Mobeel is used in the hottest places. It happens that it becomes thick, and due to heat, it becomes thin and flows in the entire engine.

6. keep in mind: Unnecessary bike parts generally refer to aftermarket accessories or modifications that are not essential for the basic functionality of a motorcycle. such as fancy decorative elements, excessively loud exhaust systems, overly customized seats that might compromise riding comfort, or elaborate body kits that add unnecessary weight and might not improve performance, depending on the intended use of the bike.

Maintain the tire pressure of your motorcycle. If your bike is parked at home for many days, then before going anywhere, definitely check the tire pressure once because it makes a slight difference in acceleration.

Use high-octane fuel, as it can withstand more pressure before igniting. High-octane fuel is more refined and pure, and engines that use it are more efficient and produce fewer emissions.

Keep your chain clean & lubricated. Keep your motorcycle chain clean and properly lubricated. Regularly clean your chain with a dedicated chain cleaner, removing dirt and grime before applying a suitable motorcycle chain lubricant in a thin, even coat, ensuring the chain tension is adjusted correctly, and avoiding over-lubrication, which can attract dirt; this helps maintain smooth operation, reduce wear and tear, and prolong the life of your chain. Clean your chain every 500-1000 miles or when visibly dirty.
